Autumn Term – Year 6

Welcome to the start of an exciting and important year in Year 6! As pupils begin their final year at primary school, the autumn term is filled with challenge, creativity, and opportunities to grow as confident learners and leaders.

This term begins with our focus on Campaigners for Change. Through English, history, art, and Mantle of the Expert, children will explore themes of democracy, justice, and protest, connecting past struggles to issues that still matter today. Pupils will take on meaningful roles—historians, campaigners, and artists—using their voices and creativity to understand and communicate why change is important.

In RE, pupils will reflect on questions such as Do you have to earn love? and What is commitment in life?

In English, core texts include Macbeth, A Christmas Carol, The Masque of Anarchy, and The Final Year. Children will write narratives, biographies, and persuasive texts linked to the Peterloo Massacre and themes of social justice. They will also celebrate Black History Month, Remembrance Day, and National Poetry Month through reading, performance, and original writing.

In Maths, the focus will be on:

Place value within 10,000,000

The four operations

Fractions

Position and direction

In Science, pupils will study Living Things and Their Habitats and Animals Including Humans, alongside developing their enquiry and practical investigation skills.

Our Mantle of the Expert projects bring learning to life:  Pupils are historians, creating a live exhibit to explain the significance of the Peterloo Massacre through drama, debate, and design. Pupils become protesters at St Peter’s Field, preparing speeches, placards, and performances to stand up for their rights and demand change.

In History, children will explore democracy, the journey to Peterloo, the Suffragettes, and local history. Geography will focus on England and Wales, with map work, rivers studies (Lledr), and comparisons of trade, climate, and landscape.

In art, pupils will study the artist Kehinde Wiley for Black History Month, draw and paint the Houses of Parliament, and design sculptures to commemorate Peterloo. Tinkology challenges include designing a symbolic crown for Macbeth and a commemorative clay tile. In Music, pupils will explore dynamics, pitch, and texture, as well as film music and songs of protest.

PE this term includes dance, dodgeball, basketball, and tag rugby.  Throughout the term, there is a strong emphasis on resilience, responsibility, and using learning to make a difference in the world.
